Despite being a middle power country, Malaysia’s geographic location and Singapore’s special relationship with the U.S. have made Malaysia strategically important to China. Mahathir’s visit to China from 17-21 August 2018 has thrown some uncertainties into the warm Malaysia-China relations due to divergence of views on several issues. This seminar will address the following questions: 1) Is Mahathir’s visit to China a catastrophe or a great success to Malaysia? 2) Has China benefited from Mahathir’s visit? And, 3) what’s the perspective of the implementation of China’s ambitious diplomatic and economic design -- The Belt and Road Initiative in Malaysia despite the cancellation of ECRL announced by Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir on his last day of his visit to China. The speaker will also share his observation and insight on how to pragmatically achieve a win-win situation by enhancing the cooperation in new manners through e.g. FDI and technology transfer, in the emerging areas, such as cross-border E-commerce, high-tech industries and so on.
